NYSACOP Statement on Tyre Nichols Incident

The New York State Association of Chiefs of Police are angered, frustrated, outraged, and saddened by the death of Tyre Nichols at the hands of men in uniform. The brutality displayed on the video released today by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is inexcusable and we must do everything in our power to not only hold accountable those who commit such atrocities, but to prevent these incidents from happening.

It is painful to watch Mr. Nichols’ family experience this type of trauma and we understand that the images displayed in the media will cause many to question their faith in our criminal justice system. Our association advocates for fair and humane treatment of every person, and an effective criminal justice system that protects each and every one of our neighbors. Our membership is comprised of law enforcement professionals from across New York State who stand together in opposing the excessive use of physical force by police officers and we demand swift accountability for those who choose to violate our laws.

Our association remains committed to providing training and advocating for practices that can keep our neighbors safe. We know that with every incident of excessive force, community trust is damaged. Even when incidents occur in other states, our neighbors, our staff, and we ourselves are impacted. We are prepared to support our membership in helping communities grieve, ensuring voices are heard, and then working to restore trust in those law enforcement professionals who are steadfastly committed to the mission of respecting human dignity and keeping people safe.
